What is the difference between liverwurst and braunschweiger??


I have a secret.
I’m not really from the South.
“Really??”, someone that knows me would ask incredulously, feigning horror.

Okay, so I guess the almost 25 years in the South hasn’t totally obliterated my northern accent.
And to set the record straight ~
Northerners do not say  ‘Long Island’ as if it were one word, tripling and overemphasizing the hard ‘g’.
At least not that I’m aware of…

I love the South~ especially the Shenandoah Valley. It is a world and culture all its own.
What makes it so wonderful?
Well, it doesn’t take long (I think I’m hearing that hard ‘g’…) to begin to wave at almost every vehicle that you pass as you drive.
I mean, really ~ talk about making you feel welcome!
Or how about going to the Ben Franklin in town where ‘everybody knows your name’.
What could be more welcoming and heartwarming??
Were there any adjustments I needed to make when I moved south?
You’ve heard the usual ~
Where are the bakeries??
The delicatessens??
Why can’t I find the Polly-o, mozzarella and ricotta???
In the end, the charm and comfort of the South wins over any perceived losses. Besides, the South caught up.

Their motto became:

“Leave no Northerner behind.”

With the ever growing influx of Northerners, this would have been impossible. Financially speaking, you could say we’ve been an asset to the economy. As the shelves and refrigerator sections filled with the things we hankered for, we began stockpiling in our joy. Relationally speaking, the South couldn’t help but embrace us. It’s who they are. The very heart of a person from the Valley is to make you feel special ~ even in their teasing about your origin.  Shoot! If they didn’t pick on you just a bit, you’d wonder if they liked you!

Now and finally to my question above.

What IS the difference between liverwurst and braunschweiger??

Liverwurst was what we called the distinctly savory, somewhat sliceable organ meat (sorry. It is what it is) in every icebox. Made from pork liver, pork fat, bacon and various spices and ‘et ceteras’, you might say it was the Northerner’s version of the Southerner’s cloth bologna.
As far as the difference between
Liverwurst and braunschweiger(liver sausage in German),also known to some as leberwurst~ there really is none, though I’m sure it can vary~ especially in the case of a secret family recipe!

My photo? Ahhh…I was able to find my treasured liverwurst (Actually I’ve known it was there, I was just avoiding what I consider a heart attack food as long as I could or as long as I could bear to.) and had it for breakfast on homemade white bread with slivered onion..oh my!
I found it at the ‘very local’ supermarket in my own town!
